Bishop Sean led the congregation of St Helena Larnaca in bidding a fond farewell to the Venerable Christopher Futcher, Archdeacon in Cyprus, and the Reverend Anne Futcher, assistant priest and Social Concern Officer, at a service of Evening Prayer on Saturday 14 September, ahead of their retirement at the end of the month.
Amongst many responsibilities Archdeacon Christopher carries, he is also Diocesan Director of Ministry and Cyprus Vocations Adviser. During the service, Bishop Sean presented accreditation certificates to five new Lay Worship Leaders who have recently completed training led by Christopher. The Futchers began their ministries in Cyprus in 2019, arriving from our link diocese of Exeter, in England. Bishop Sean thanked Anne and Christopher for their ministries on the island, and their work for the wider diocese. Please join Sean in holding them in your prayers. On 16 September the Church remembers Ninian, bishop and apostle of the Picts, c. 432.
But who was Saint Ninian? Saint Ninian On 13 September the Church remembers John Chrysostom, bishop and teacher of the faith and known as the Patron Saint of preachers. But who was John Chrysostom?
John Chrysostom Did you know that September 9, is International Buy a Priest a Beer Day? On this festive day, faithful church members all over the world (should) take their priests/pastor out for a beer and get to know them better.
International Buy a Priest a Beer Day! 800 years ago, a scholar nicknamed “the dumb ox” proposed a simple proof of God’s existence – it changed everything. Centuries later, it’s now a famous argument known to theologians and atheists alike ...
Thomas Aquinas: 5 Proofs For God’s Existence As you probably know by now, the new tune from Coldplay (aka the #BiggestBandintheWorld) is called “We Pray”. Premiered at Glastonbury, it’s had a zillion streams on Spotify in the past week and taken up residence in radio stations everywhere. And when a 3 minute song quotes lines from the Bible, mentions prayer no fewer than 37 times ...
Coldplay: We Pray There is an old Puritan Prayer Book I own called The Valley of Vision (a collection of Puritan prayers and devotions) which I bought from a second-hand bookshop when I attended Theological College. There are a handful of prayers I run back to, but my favourite speaks of the paradox of life. It’s a great read—nice and short but powerful.
The Valley of Vision: A Prayer On 31 August the Church remembers Saint Aidan, Bishop, known as the Northern Missionary and first Abbot of Lindisfarne – also known as Holy Island.
But who was Saint Aidan? Saint Aidan On 30 August the Church remembers John Bunyan (1688) spiritual writer, best known for his book The Pilgrim’s Progress.
But who was John Bunyan? John Bunyan On 28 August the Church remembers Aurelius Augustinus Hipponensis (354-430), better known as Augustine of Hippo. He was a Bishop, philosopher, theologian, mystic, poet, pastor, preacher and teacher of the faith. He is the patron saint of brewers, printers, theologians, and a number of cities and dioceses. He is remembered as the greatest of the Christian Church Fathers. More than any other writer, he developed what would become known as systematic theology, or an explanation of how Christianity fits into views of the universe, creation, and humankind’s relationship with God.
Baptist minister, Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his celebrated “I Have A Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC on 28 August 1963 to crowds of over 250,000. It helped spur the passage of the US Civil Rights Act of 1964. On the 60th Anniversary of this legendary speech, it’s worth reminding ourselves of King’s words, and the relevance they have for today’s world, by reading the full transcript of his speech below.
